The translation is missing a few sentences from the original German story. The story itself is one of the best stories of Gothic horror ever..Meyrink wrote many excellent horror? stories and novels, but also satires. In this he resembles Edgar Allan Poe, whom he translated into German. Meyrink is no copycat of Poe though; he has a highly original way of storytelling. Interestingly Meyrink and Poe share birthday: Jan 19th. Poe was born 59 years before Meyrink though.
