Is the comma after tomatoes an American English rule? From my understanding of British English, having a comma before an and in a list would be considered to be incorrect? grammar.

A practice I use to check my writing, is to read it out loud. Commas most often indicate a slight pause, & that's something we do naturally when speaking. So become your own proof reader. If, when reading out? loud, you pause at a place where there is no comma, you probably need to put one in. This may not work for everyone, but it helps me.
