Old English was not 'derived from German'. It comes from Germanic dialects spoken on the shores of the North Sea, a remnant? of which survives as Frisian. It was *intermediate* between Dutch, Low German (Plattdeutsch), and Danish.

There is no evidence that Irish missionaries were active in England before about 630 A.D. The extra letters that? expressed the distinctive sounds of old English were probably added by the English themselves, not Irish missionaries, because they mainly derived from the Germanic runes.
