LESSON 3: EASY Water is a very important part of our life; without it, we cannot live. Even though it is needed, we still destroy a lot of drinking water when we drill for natural gas. Chemicals called hydrofracing fluid are pumped into the ground to keep the pressure high so that natural gas can come out of the ground. This 'fracing' fluid pollutes the groundwater so we can't drink it. The government of New York is no longer allowing hydrofracing in the state. Other states are thinking about stopping it as well. DIFFICULT Water is a critical element of our existence; its absence produces certain death. Despite its importance, vast amounts of potable water are destroyed by natural gas production. Chemicals referred to as hydrofracing fluid are pumped into the ground to ensure high pressure so that the natural gas can be extracted from the well. This 'fracing' fluid pollutes the groundwater rendering it unsuitable for human consumption. The government of New York has banned hydrofracing. Other states are contemplating a ban as well.
