He was a very prolific writer from an early age and wrote hundreds of novels, novellas, and short stories in his lifetime. The nine stories in this selection tell about hard times in Eastern Europe, especially in Hungaria (Jokai was involved in the Hungarian uprising of 1848), as well as of ancient superstitions and folk lore.
