Henry II grandmother was sister to three king of Sctoland, and Edward was Henry's direct descendant. Wouldn't have been easier to claim the throne that way? After all, HE built the actual Enlgish sense of nationality, showing he was an intelligent man of resources, being the first king to speak correct? English of the period.
