Stowe was a very witty, perceptive woman. This must have been a shock. A Southener, it was always amusing/exasperating in conversing with people who did not even realize the bigoted? things they said. What a mind fairyland! Calling someone "lazy" who waits on you hand and foot, without pay, is the musing of insanity. Upon realizing that a black person is smarter than they are, many of them (still) of the antebellum mindset, are confused and baffled. Marie is, as they say,"a Trip."
